  • Recovered from E-automate Victoria database corruption (live database and backup tables affected), limiting data loss to approximately 1 hour and restoring business operations quickly

  • Migrated three VMware servers to vCenter on an IBM BladeCenter with dual blades and SAS storage, a total of ten VM's moved

  • Recovered a failed VMware blade after onboard USB module corruption by replacing it with a modified aftermarket Sandisk USB module, rebuilt the configuration, and restored the full failover cluster to quorum

  • Responded to a security breach where attackers gained remote control of MS servers via an exposed RDP port and weak credentials (left open during testing by another admin). Isolated affected systems, removed malware, and restored secure configuration, preventing further compromise. Tools used, Kali Linux and Bitdefender and recent backup images

  • Remediated a Drupal website compromise that turned two company sites into remote attack vectors and torrent servers (part of a Pakistani hacking campaign). Restored from backup, removed malicious files, patched vulnerabilities, and hardened the servers to prevent recurrence

  • Identified and addressed an employee running illegal torrent software, downloading copyrighted material, and storing pornographic content on a company computer, mitigating legal and security risks. User fully locked out and stake holders were notified immediately.

  • Built a custom payment page for our two Drupal websites, integrating with Moneris to enable secure online credit and debit card payments. Replaced the outdated PayPal integration; developed a custom solution due to legacy Drupal code and limitations of the turnkey AWS VPS environment.

  • Led the strategic migration of the company’s IT infrastructure from an on-premise VMware Vcenter server environment to a consolidated cloud-based data center. Addressed high maintenance costs, scalability limitations, relocation downtime risks, and disaster recovery inefficiencies identified from previous physical data center.

  • Migrated legacy Cisco ASA and PIX firewalls at five branch locations to modern solutions: conducted a successful proof-of-concept with pfSense, followed by full deployment of Netgate devices. Simultaneously upgraded switching infrastructure to managed switches and WiFi AP's to support future VoIP deployment and network segmentation.

  • Consolidated internet service providers across five branch locations by implementing VLANs to combine Voice and Data traffic over a single ISP connection, reducing the number of ISP circuits and associated costs while maintaining performance and reliability.

Explanation of the VMware Migration

The company's IT infrastructure had started as a fragmented setup with multiple scattered on-premise VMware servers. Over time, these were consolidated into a more centralized VMware data center environment (using vCenter on an IBM BladeCenter with SAS storage and failover clustering).

While this consolidation improved management compared to the earlier dispersed setup, it still relied heavily on physical hardware. This created several ongoing challenges:

  • High maintenance and hardware refresh costs

  • Limited scalability as business needs grew

  • Significant downtime risks whenever physical servers needed to be moved or relocated

  • Inefficient disaster recovery processes

Past experiences with physical data center moves had shown that relocating servers often caused major user disruptions, inflated costs, and added unnecessary complexity. These lessons made it clear that continuing with a purely physical on-premise model was not sustainable.

As a result, the recommended and optimal path forward was a full cloud migration. This shift would eliminate the burdens of owning and maintaining physical hardware, improve scalability, reduce relocation risks, strengthen disaster recovery capabilities, and lower long-term operational costs.
